Be An English Volunteer in Caye Caulker

11/27/09 13:25

You might be planning to go to Belize for a Caribbean holiday. You might be planning to go here because of the favorable weather and amenities that are well within your set budget. You might be planning to go to Belize because of the adventures waiting for you.

There are a great number of reasons to visit this beloved nation, but perhaps only a handful actually go out to this place to volunteer and teach English literacy to those students who need it the most. Only a few people have the big heart to share what they have in their minds and let others discover their own thoughts about issues.

For example, there's this island called Caye Caulker, which, until nearly two years ago, never had a formal high school institution. Either Belizeans in this island sign up to stay overnight for a week or travel every day by boat to and from Belize City. This is not only expensive for the students, but dangerous as well.

About two years ago, two expat women dreamed of making the island's first school, which was successfully built and named Ocean Academy Community High School. This is recognized by the government, though it is not give any hand in its operation. Of course this means a lot of money still has to be raised by the school in order to continue its operations. Right now it highly relies on volunteers and donations to be able to do so. This is on top of the personal money that the two founders usually give away.

If you want to volunteer and make the high school a more effective one, then you can go and check out the website of the community school. The school is still in need of effective tutors who can give their time to contribute to its quest to improve literacy and education in the island.
