Liquid oxygen introduced to speed up decomposition in city dump

11/25/09 13:25

Depite the promotion of eco tourism as a viable tourism niche for Belize, excessive garbage ironically remains to be one of the most pressing problems here. There are just so much garbage in the dumps especially in Belize City that it becomes difficult for the local City Council to provide a solution.

Environmental company Eco-Friendly Solutions, in response, said that they have the answer to this major problem. The solution, according to them, lies in liquid oxygen. One spray of the liquid oxygen will speed up the decomposing process. What normally takes years to decompose will now only take a few months.

In a recent pitch to the City Council, the product is hydrogen dioxide, which basically inserts oxygen into organic matter so that they work faster in decomposing garbage. Furthermore, company representative Luis Garcia said that the bacteria becomes anaerobic, which means they do not release methane gas and/or hydrogen sulphide as a by-product in the air. What it only does is to provide the bacteria with additional oxygen that it can work with to make the work faster and better.

Right now, the company and the city government has conducted a test pilot to find out if the product does work. With the amount of garbage in the pile, this should be gone in around a month already, which means this has to be decomposed by around December 23. Once successful, we might see Eco-Friendly Solution's solution utilized in the wider market.

In the same briefing, the company also pitched its range of biodegradable utensils, plates, and the like, which have been made entirely out of scratch.

We are in the time and age of information, and a time and age when consensus has been made that we should all try to save the environment. Modern technology is helping us realize this goal, so we should all do something to utilize it. We should all try in one way or another to convince our local governments to support such endeavours.
