I have been living in Belize city for the past two years. I bought a guest house and I believe the safety issues for tourist has been blow way out off proportion and it is killing tourist numbers in Belize city that is staggering. I have had one complaint in two years from a guest that had anything close to dangerous encounters in the city. Read more: Safety and tourism in Belize city. Like many cities in the world, there is always a part of any city that would be harmful and dangerous for passerby's, visitors and newcomers. Belize City is no exception. Of course, it has some beautiful and interesting parts and also there are streets and alleys that are not recommended for visitors to go through. This kind of nature certainly should not put a total negative impact that Belize is not safe for travelers. The country of Belize on a whole is an exceptional destination for tourist to visit today. It's once capital, Belize City is of course the entrance and exit to such a beautiful jewel, and in no way gives the great experience of what the total country would have to offer to visitors. 18 months after one of the country's most controversial news agency opened its website, it was (temporarily?) unceremoniously shut down. The reason? Belize is known to be one of the easiest destination to travel to. It could be somewhat expensive to travel, but you can easily come here from Three days to two weeks easily. What makes our country so unique and special is that we are not pounded by heavy tourism like Cancun and Cozumel. Belize is still one of the many destinations that is being undiscovered by the world's major tourism markets. We boast the longest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere, which gives great diving and snorkeling to our visitors. We are also home to ancient Maya Ruins, cool clear waterfalls and rivers and exotic plant and animal life and over a hundred little islands that sits in our shore line.
